Monthly Meeting

Just got back from our monthly meeting - there is a lot going on in October: comedy, live music and an organ concert. All three events will raise money for our work and give you a chance to talk to us. Some members of our group will take part in the Energizer Night Run this Saturday (cheer them on!) and Human Rights Day, 10 December, is already in our minds. We'll keep you posted.

Elections in Zimbabwe

Today, Zimbabwe will hold harmonised elections composed of local government, House of Assembly, Senate and presidential elections. They are the first to be held in Zimbabwe since the violent second round of presidential election held on 27 June 2008. In the run-up to the June 2008 election at least 200 people were killed, while thousands were tortured and beaten in a wave of political violence that engulfed the country from April to June 2008 with the acquiescence and in some cases with active involvement of the state security services.

Talk on Torture (german)

Thursday, 27.06.2013, a member of our group will give a talk on torture in Aachen at 7.30 pm, "Café Zuhause", Sandkaulstraße 109. The talk will be in German.

UPDATE

The event was well attended. More than 25 Students were at the cafe „Zu Hause“ and got involved in a lively discussion about torture and the big question if Amnesty “actually works”. For 2 hours, studies and football (which was broadcast in the other room) were forgotten, it was all about questions like “who tortures and why?” and “what can we do about it?”. At the end, everybody, even the most skeptical interrogators, signed our Egypt petitions. The organizers came to a positive result: Yes, Amnesty does work. We will repeat this!

Who we are

The English speaking group of Amnesty International in Cologne has recently been re-established (2009). So, we are quite “young” as a group, but of different ages, walks of life and nationalities. Our common (working) language is English.

What we do

Writing letters makes a difference for every one who is in prison only because of his beliefs. So we all take part in the WRITE-A-THON: http://www.amnestyusa.org/writeathon You want to see more, why? "Your letters made a difference in my life"

Where we meet

We meet once a month in the Köln (Cologne) office of Amnesty International (Domstr. 56) and are currently working on Myanmar, and will soon turn to Africa!

Being one of only three English speaking groups in Germany (the other are located in Munich and Berlin), we play a vital role as part of Amnesty International in Germany and worldwide.

You want to join us or know more about

  • Amnesty International
  • the fight for human rights
  • the situation in Myanmar?

Don't hesitate. Contact us! http://www.amnesty-cologne.de/Main/Contact.

About Amnesty

Amnesty International was founded in 1961 to campaign for the release of “prisoners of conscience” - people imprisoned solely for their political or religious beliefs.

Today Amnesty International is a highly respected International organization working to guarantee the fundamental rights of all human beings, regardless of race, nationality, gender, religion, age, political opinion or sexual preference.

In 1977 Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its work for human rights.
